Happy new year — with an emphasis on new. I hope that the blurry days between holidays helped you recharge for what’s to come.
The day after a lovely Christmas, I woke to learn that my house upstate had flooded, so it’s been a different kind of blur. Thank you to my incredible neighbors for seeing me through (again). It made all the difference — especially as a reminder that our loved ones and their health are what really matters. Stuff? That you can replace.
Before that, I’d been happily fielding messages from friends who told me what they’d gifted themselves from my holiday guide, and I thought about the treats I’d snuck myself in recent weeks to see me through what is usually the rockiest time of the year. It was a first. Is this a single-mom thing? A mom-mom thing? Or just a fun excuse to get what you want? Let me know what, if anything, you gave yourself…

The Things
Diptyque Oud candle/ A mom-needs-a-treat duty-free buy on the way home from a Thanksgiving trip with my son to Paris and Marseille, where I’d done all my Christmas shopping. (When is Maison Empereur opening here?!) Somehow, the 47-euro price seemed like a deal, prompting me to try something other than the usual Feu de Bois.
Dries Van Noten Pamplona pants/ Tried on these crazy-wide, seasonless trousers at the Paris store and found them on eBay for $400 less as soon as I got home. It’s Dries’ final collection: Had to!
Modo Yoga class card/ Somehow spotted Modo’s holiday promo email in junk mail and, well, it worked. I stopped making time for yoga last year, and the combination of not stretching and not breathing gradually ground me to a halt. First, five culty hot yoga classes at Modo, then weekly Zoom classes with my favorite, Diana Rilov!
Muji gloves/ Found these gloves among the stocking stuffers to replace the leg warmers I’d been wearing on my hands. (Long story.) Love the color — especially on the ribbing. Lost them within days; found them in tote bag #79 yesterday. Winning!
A better attitude/ Can one be a self-taught optimist? Stay tuned…
Playlist
Here’s my fall/winter diary in musical form. For shorter days (and longer nights), from a Falco double-dip to inappropriate Devo; a resurfaced rock anthem for long subway commutes to what came out of the rabbit hole triggered by A Complete Unknown. This year, I vow to get back making a playlist per season…

The Siena show is breathtaking! As for Diptyque, I am Orangerie for life.
I lunched with friends at Manuela upon your recommendation and it was fantastic!
